"One of the many hazards the settlers faced was rattlesnakes.
C.C. Zupp who came to Douglas in 1869 to farm the eastern side of
Section 3, was binding his grain in the late fall of 1874 when he was
bitten twice on his foot by the same snake. Zupp took his knife, cut
out a chunk of flesh where each bite was, and bound on a chew of
tobacco. He then went to his house, drank a bowl of sweet mik, and
put on a bread poultice before going back to work in the field."
